I don’t like WordPress 2.3

It’s screwed up. Plain and simple. Speaking of simple, I’ve seen a lot of talk about an importer for “Simple Tags” but I can’t find it. I think a lot of people are getting “Simple Tags” confused with “Simple Tagging”. Even some of the bigger bloggers keep repeating it, and I think it’s false.

  • Update:
Looks like there are 2 “Simple Tags” plugins. The one everyone is talking about is the successor to Simple Tagging. It’s nothing like the one I use. So the import still doesn’t do me any good. If you want to check out the new one, visit the Simple Tags plugin page.

Another problem with the 2.3 tags, they take people away from your site. When someone clicks on a tag in your post, the go to the tag listing for WordPress.com. That does me no good at all, my blog isn’t on their .com service. I’d rather keep using the tags that go to Technorati, at least it’s not limited to WordPress.com blogs.

WP 2.3 also broke a lot of plugins. For a piece of software that relies so much on outside developers that seems like a big mistake. it’s one thing to deprecate something, at least people know that it’s going to disappear later on. It’s another thing to just drop something and break things.

Lucky for me I only upgraded this blog to test out 2.3. I’ll keep the previous version on my others until some of these problems are fixed.

Win $15 from Allan’s World Movie Blog.

Allen’s World is giving away money. Nothing huge yet, but free money is always nice. If it goes well he said he’ll be doing it again with a bigger prize.

Check out his movie blog, that’s where he’s giving away cash.

A Million Tiny Wikis.

John Cow has proven that he can take someone else’s idea and make it work. So why is he getting flack for making MillionEuroWiki.com?

False Perception

People think you have to come up with something original to succeed. Something that has never been seen before. Something that will change the world. Not true. John Cow has a great quote on his MillionEuroWiki update that I think is perfect. So perfect that I’m going to steal it.

After the invention of the Internal Combustion Engine it was easier to make a car that was small enough and reliable enough to be practicle. Just like with the steam cars, a lot of people were trying to come up with an internal combustion engine car at the same time. The two most important people were Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz. Both of these men patented a car in Germany in 1886 but Karl Benz patented his first so most people say he invented the car.

I left a comment saying that I’d rather be Henry Ford than Karl Benz, and here’s why.

Ford didn’t invent the car. He invented the assembly line and mass production. This allowed him to make more cars faster. It also allowed him to make his cars cheaper. Why would you want to go cheap when you’re trying to make money? Volume. The less people have to pay, the more people that will pay. No, what Henry Ford made wasn’t innovative, but how he made it was.

Face it, if you have a blog or a Wiki it isn’t original. I don’t care what you’re blogging about. It’s not what you do that matters, it’s how you do it. What the Milk Man is doing isn’t original, but it’s working so far. Why wouldn’t it continue to work? If he puts some of the money he’s already made back into it to improve the site then I doubt he’s got anything to worry about. You know the Cow is smart enough to do that.

Pretty soon the only thing people will be able to complain about is that they didn’t do it first.

MyBlogLog responds to account mixup.

In the last post I tried to warn you about possible danger to your MyBlogLog account. I wasn’t trying to scare anyone. I was concerned about the damage someone could do to your account if they didn’t realize it was the wrong one, or if they were just mean spirited.

To my surprise I actually got a comment from Ian Kennedy.

Hi Jason,

A handful of accounts were assigned to the wrong userID when we rolled in the Yahoo/MyBlogLog integration on Thursday. Please click on Contact Us in the footer of the page and we’ll get this sorted out for you.

Thanks,

Ian Kennedy
Product Manger, MyBlogLog

There you go. If you’re having trouble with your account use the “Contact Us” link. They’ll try to get it fixed.

I do have one other suggestion, if you’re having trouble logging into MyBlogLog. Try Firefox. For some strange reason MyBlogLog is working for me in Firefox now. I’m still having trouble with IE, no surprise, but at least I’m not landing in another person’s account. Now I’m being sent back to the login screen to try the merge over and over.

$500, no bull.

If you’re familiar with JohnCow.com then you probably know about the redesign. Looks like the Milk Man is finally breaking away from O.J. (other John) and striking out on his own. Not that he’s severing all ties. Nope, JohnCow is still raking in the moola. Not just for himself either, for his readers as well. After the success of his blog, it’s a pretty good bet he knows about making money online.

Win $500 at JohnCow.com.

The Milk Man knows that you have to spend money to make money, but you don’t have to spend your money. Somehow he’s talked his web hosting provider into putting up $500 as a prize, for the second time. All the rules can be found in the cow’s barnyard, err… blog.

How would I spend that $500?

I’ll admit, I’d be tempted to spend it on crap I don’t really need. Who wouldn’t? What I need to do is follow in the cows footsteps. (Insert poop joke here.)

What I need to do.

  • I need to hire Hyder, they guy that came up with the Milk Man’s great new design.
  • I need to promote my site.
  • I need to give away something cool.
  • I need to build traffic.

Would $500 cover all that? Nope, but it would be a start.

Your MyBlogLog account is in danger.

When I tried to sign into my account at MyBlogLog I found myself in the account of someone called “immortALance”. That is not my account.

Major security breach.
If you have an account at MyBlogLog, you’d better go check it out. I didn’t change anything for immortALance, but if someone else winds up in your account you might not be as lucky.

If you find that your account has been mixed up send an e-mail to MyBlogLog and let them know. They need to fix this. It is a major security problem. Any personal information in your account is in danger.

Starting write now.

Emma over at It’s Write Now is giving away an 8-Gig iPod Video Nano. Now that is a prize worth writing home about.

Seriously, that’s one of the best giveaways I’ve seen on a blog. To top it off, she paid for it herself. Unlike a lot of Big Name Blog giveaways where Big Name Bloggers give away stuff that was given to them. Shoot, even if I didn’t have a chance to win I had to write about that one.

Nope, no shwag cast offs here. So get over there and enter before Halloween.

Why I started this blog.

I run FanaticSpace.com and write AnimeFansOnline.com for 451 Press, but I keep wanting to post things that don’t fit on either blog. So I decided to start a personal blog to catch all the miscellaneous stuff I want to post. I found out that the dot com version of my name wasn’t registered so I jumped on it.

Someone does have the dot eu version registered. Hi Jason! That doesn’t bother me though, because I don’t live in Europe. It doesn’t load for me, so I can’t see if it’s being used or not.

There are few categories at the moment, but that’s likely to change as I post stuff. I just added the ones I think I’ll be using the most.
